Samsung shock announcement to leave the LED grow lighting market
Samsung have shocked the grow lighting industry with the announcement they are leaving the LED market in 2025. Samsung confirmed to suppliers they will take the last orders for LEDs mid 2025 and finish shipping at the end of 2025.
Samsung have become a trusted brand in the LED grow light market in the last few years. Their high performance LEDs led the market for a long time and are considered a high quality product that demands a premium price.
Who will replace Samsung in the grow light market?
The good news is that many other LED manufacturers such as Cree, Osram & Philips have caught up with Samsung in terms of quality and performance. There are also a number of LED manufacturers in China like Honglitronic, BMTC and LEDestar. In the past these companies were considered budget options. However they have improved their quality and performance of their LEDs while maintaining a competitive price. Those concerned about quality of the Chinese suppliers should note Honglitronic and BMTC are very big companies. They are stock-listed companies in China and they contract manufacture for Samsung and Cree.
Is Samsung exiting the LED market a good thing for the industry?
It is not good Samsung are exiting the LED grow lighting market as it reduces competition. However Samsung have been charging a premium for their horticultural LEDs as demand has been very high from consumers. Now there are other products that can match the performance of Samsung horticultural LEDs but at a better price. We hope the consumer will benefit from the sale of grow lights with the same performance but at a better price in the near future.
